Correct Back Propping Process

Cantilever Loading Bays

Cantilever Loading Bays

When using Preston or Hutchinson Builders’ cantilever loading bays, the following process should be followed to ensure adequate back propping is installed for your structure:

  1. A marked drawing, indicating the loading bay location, and a full set of structural designs should be sent to a structural engineer.
  2. These documents should be accompanied with the loading bay manufacturers’ design verification certificate.
  3. The structural engineer will use these documents to generate a temporary back propping solution. Click here for an example drawing.

Design Verification Certification

The back propping design certification should include the following information:

  • The maximum SWL of each loading bay
  • Manufacturer name and model number of prop to be used
  • Number of props and specific locations for installation
  • Number of floors to be back propped below the last loading bay installed

All of the above details should form part of the SWMS as the installation methodology.

If Hutchinson Builders’ personnel are not performing the installation, the site management team must ensure all of the above information is made available to those responsible.
